U.S. truckers marched from California to Washington to protest coronavirus restrictions, following in the footsteps of colleagues in Canada. The American movement was called The People's Convoy ("People's Convoy"). The participants said they wanted to "give a boost to the economy" and "reopen the country". According to the participants, the march will last 11 days. About 25 separate motorcades are planning to join forces and gather on March 7 in Washington. Promoter Bob Bolus, in an interview with WJLA, said the convoy was not going to break laws or block traffic, but warned that this could happen if their demands were not met. The demands of the "People's Convoy" include the abolition of mandatory vaccinations and the wearing of masks.
Note, on February 22, Fox News reported that the National Guard of the District of Columbia in the United States is trying to find heavy tow trucks to unblock the Washington Beltway, which may be blocked by protesting truckers. The People's Convoy has already raised almost $500,000 through online crowdsourcing to fund the truckers' action. On February 23, participants in the action received $30,000 each to buy food, gasoline, and consumables.
Recall that Canadian truckers formed a column of 50,000 truckers about 70 km long. Protesting against vaccination passports, Canadian truckers have already arrived in the Canadian capital of Ottawa and took part in a protest rally. Canadian protesters are demanding the abolition of vaccination passports and the end of the 14-day quarantine at the US-Canada border for drivers who are not vaccinated against COVID-19. The Prime Minister of Canada, ahead of protests against vaccination passports, fled to a safe location that has not been disclosed.
On February 15, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared a state of emergency in the country. On February 18, the police began to actively disperse the protesters. Earlier, U.S. Senator Rand Paul of North Carolina condemned Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for invoking the emergency law to crack down on trucker protests. Paul pointed out that this law is extremely dangerous, and warned the United States against using similar legislation.
